Letter from Christa Sywulak-Herr CHS Alumni Association Past President I had the distinct honor of sharing the afternoon with two tremendous graduates of the CHS Class of 1971 - Nona Melnick and Neil Klinghoffer - as they bestowed some of the most generous gifts I’ve ever coordinated through the Alumni Association. As the Class celebrated their 50th Reunion (one year late!) in October 2022, they knew they wanted to give back in some meaningful way to our current Cheltenham community. Last month, I was apprised of their $2000 donation from a ‘71 classmate being sent in and could I make some suggestions for its use. I immediately responded with our Senior Scholarship opportunity for a Class of 2023er but that same week I was approached by Karen Shaffran about a superb PBL 12 photo diversity project installment for CHS with a $1400 cost, as well as being reminded of the heightened need for contributions to families in dire financial distress through our CSD Home & School Services department serving K-12 students, including a homeless mother who just lost her job and was desperate to find the $2400 needed to move her four kids into their permanent Cheltenham home that she had spent months beforehand securing. I sent all three possibilities to the Class of ‘71 Reunion Committee and was BEYOND surprised when they responded the other night that they were not choosing just ONE of these worthy options BUT ALL THREE!!!!!! I do not have enough words to describe this blessing!!! Nona, Neil, and I, checks in hand, visited Ms Shaffran’s Seniors today to learn more from them about their experience in the CHS Project Based Learning cohort and the new diversity photo project they’ve expertly created being unveiled this spring then traveled over to Admin to meet and hear from Jen Mosher & Mechel Horsey and how they tirelessly strive to meet the needs of our CSD students and their families every single day! By June 5th - Senior Awards Night - the CHS Class of 1971 will have graciously donated $5800 to better the lives, experiences, and futures of countless Cheltenham students!!! My Blue & Gold heart is incredibly FULL and so very appreciative to these CHS graduates for realizing the Panther power of giving back to the community that raised and supported them 50+ years ago… I promise to do everything in my power to continue to bridge our Alumni with our current stellar students and strengthen the ties that bind us all: This Is Cheltenham!!! 💙💛💙💛 #PantherPride -- Christa Sywulak-Herr, February 28, 2023 |
