Read about Reunion Donations from the Class of '71 to the Cheltenham School District

Meet the Wilsons, a Cheltenham School District family and recipients of CHS Class of ’71 generosity, alongside Jenn Mosher, the Cheltenham School District Home and School Visitor and Social Worker.

Letter from Christa Sywulak-Herr

CHS Alumni Association Past President

I had the distinct honor of sharing the afternoon with two tremendous graduates of the CHS Class of 1971 - Nona Melnick and Neil Klinghoffer - as they bestowed some of the most generous gifts I’ve ever coordinated through the Alumni Association. As the Class celebrated their 50th Reunion (one year late!) in October 2022, they knew they wanted to give back in some meaningful way to our current Cheltenham community.

Last month, I was apprised of their $2000 donation from a ‘71 classmate being sent in and could I make some suggestions for its use. I immediately responded with our Senior Scholarship opportunity for a Class of 2023er but that same week I was approached by Karen Shaffran about a superb PBL 12 photo diversity project installment for CHS with a $1400 cost, as well as being reminded of the heightened need for contributions to families in dire financial distress through our CSD Home & School Services department serving K-12 students, including a homeless mother who just lost her job and was desperate to find the $2400 needed to move her four kids into their permanent Cheltenham home that she had spent months beforehand securing.

I sent all three possibilities to the Class of ‘71 Reunion Committee and was BEYOND surprised when they responded the other night that they were not choosing just ONE of these worthy options BUT ALL THREE!!!!!! I do not have enough words to describe this blessing!!!

Nona, Neil, and I, checks in hand, visited Ms Shaffran’s Seniors today to learn more from them about their experience in the CHS Project Based Learning cohort and the new diversity photo project they’ve expertly created being unveiled this spring then traveled over to Admin to meet and hear from Jen Mosher & Mechel Horsey and how they tirelessly strive to meet the needs of our CSD students and their families every single day! By June 5th - Senior Awards Night - the CHS Class of 1971 will have graciously donated $5800 to better the lives, experiences, and futures of countless Cheltenham students!!!

My Blue & Gold heart is incredibly FULL and so very appreciative to these CHS graduates for realizing the Panther power of giving back to the community that raised and supported them 50+ years ago… I promise to do everything in my power to continue to bridge our Alumni with our current stellar students and strengthen the ties that bind us all:

This Is Cheltenham!!! 💙💛💙💛 #PantherPride

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Harvey Fleegler, a longtime resident of Lafayette Hill, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023. Harvey was born October 4, 1943, to Harry and Florence (Levin) Fleegler in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Harvey grew up in the East Mount Airy section of Philadelphia. He graduated from Germantown High School and from Temple University with both an undergraduate and master’s degree.

Harvey taught math at various grade levels for over 30 years at Cheltenham High School. He loved working with kids and teaching difficult math concepts, and he would also tutor students.

In addition to teaching, Harvey coached tennis at various levels. He coached the men’s team at his alma mater Temple University. He also coached both men’s and women’s tennis at the high school level at Plymouth Whitemarsh and at the Mount.

Harvey loved the outdoors and exploring different places. He spent over 30 years at Camp Canadensis in the Poconos. He was a true outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed teaching others to fish, including a generation of Camp Canadensis alumni, and most recently his grandsons. He was very resourceful and would tie his own flies and even make his own bullets. He loved to travel both overseas and across the United States, including driving his Honda Accord above the arctic circle in Alaska.

Harvey also loved collecting various things from a young age. For Harvey, it was not just about obtaining things, but he was keenly interested in the history of each item and the individuals displayed on a particular coin or stamp, including presidents, heads of state, or other famous and notable people.

Harvey is survived by his wife Cheryl (Wachtel), his son Bill Fleegler and his partner Mina Kuriashkin of Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, and his daughter Jodi Scott and son-in-law Jeffrey Scott of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by four grandchildren Reid, Jason, Dylan, and Sloane, and three grand dogs, Lindor, Simon, and Coconut.

I can only hope that everyone else had as good a time at the reunion as I did! It was wild to see so many familiar faces all at once, and realize how long I’ve known some of you.

I can’t thank the organizers enough. You are the glue that keeps many of us in touch.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy 7th decade!

All my best,

Matthew Starobin

PS Amy Coane, if you’re listening, I somehow ended up with one of the terrific Shoemaker photos you sent me. Happy to get it back to you. Sorry!
PPS. On an obscure note, I have terrific memories of the music teacher at Lynnwood. Miss Davis? If anyone knows about her, I’d love to know.

I just published a new book called The Beer Diet: How to Drink Beer and NOT Gain Weight, and a free download of the ebook is now available on Amazon for a limited time. It would help me if you download a free copy, and it may also help your waistline if you read it. A print version is also available for sale, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to my local food bank, Boca Helping Hands. Here's a link to the book:

Cheers!
