Saul Fox grew up in the Pennsylvania Delaware Valley and somehow still can’t believe it has been 55 years since high school. After college, law school, and a long career in business and private equity — including an earlier chapter as a partner at KKR — he founded Fox Paine & Company in 1996. Since then, he has spent decades working on acquisitions, turnarounds, and investments across a wide range of industries, including insurance, reinsurance, independent energy production, geophysical software, hospitality, consumer products, and sophisticated medical diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Along the way, he has had the good fortune to work with some genuinely remarkable people.
But the biggest surprise — and happiest chapter — of his life began recently.
In 2023, Saul traded Woodside, California, for Miami Beach, thinking he was simply beginning a new adventure in warmer, more tax-friendly weather. Then, just two weeks to the day after arriving, on June 13, 2023, he met Dr. Swoboda (“Boddy”) Fox (née Haberland), the University of Miami internist assigned as his physician by the Chief Executive of the University of Miami Health System. What began as a medical appointment quickly became a life-changing love story.
Saul says he is “madly in love with my wifey,” and the two are now happily building a life together in Miami Beach.
An equally important part of that new chapter has been Boddy’s daughter, Aaliyah Haberland — now part of the family in every sense — who has joined Fox Paine as Chief of Staff. Saul is enormously proud of the close family the three of them have built together.
Professionally, Saul remains active at Fox Paine and continues to work on business ventures, most notably as Chairman of Global Indemnity Group (NASDAQ: GBLI), a division of which originally belonged to Cheltenham High School classmate and close friend Frank Freudberg’s family, as well as in the redevelopment of real estate across South Florida.
These days, however, Saul is also devoting substantial personal energy and resources to something more mission-driven: building organizations and online communities aimed at countering the growing influence of hate-driven social media voices and misinformation. Through digital and social-networking tools, he hopes to encourage more constructive dialogue and reduce the toxic polarization that increasingly dominates online life.
Outside of work, Saul was recently appointed to a five-year term on the Library of Congress Trust Fund Board by the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. He has also served on a number of nonprofit and educational boards, including those connected with the University of Pennsylvania Law School and the Hoover Institution. Saul remains endlessly curious, deeply engaged in current events, and optimistic that people can still surprise each other for the better.
Most of all, Saul feels grateful — for family, for friendships old and new, and for the unexpected turns life can still take well into his seventies.
